I am still learning things from Jim. He was the first to help me actually connect all of the components and actually gave me my first solar panel and battery.

We arrived in Quartzsite in December and knew we wanted to install a solar system. We went to the RTR in January and attended Jim’s solar seminar, then I talked with him afterwards. We felt confident to purchase our system and after the panels were installed on the motorhome roof, Jim gave more advice, guidance and assistance to finish it up. It’s been working great, sure helps us to boondock successfully.
I met Jim first in the forums, when he helped me plan out how I was going to get internet on the road, and then in Ehrenberg when he warmly welcomed me to the Thanksgiving potluck. Over the next weeks he helped me test my wifi booster, determine whether I needed a better field plane for the antenna, learn the care and feeding of batteries (critical stuff!), troubleshoot a converter, and then plan and assist setting up my solar system.
My situation was somewhat unique in that I had to split my battery bank. He helped me determine what was the best controller for my budget and that requirement, where to install panels, and how to wire, fuse, and properly strip and crimp. What was especially important was that he listened to my needs and as a result my system, while not for everyone, fits my needs perfectly.
Jim was always patient, and took as much time as necessary to explain what are often complex concepts. If you are on a budget, and want to work from “this is what I have to work with” (rather than the figure out what your needs are first traditional advice for solar), I can’t recommend him more highly. He understands sometimes you have to work within a budget and limited space and have to fit in your usage after the fact.
